Reality Orientation: This Is Why There Are Exclusion Zones


Volcanologists know that active volcanoes are not as quiet as they might appear. Things go on inside the fire mountains that can lead to this:



Volcanologists know about the hazards — gases, pyroclastic flows, ballistics, intense ashfall — and they have a pretty good idea about how far those hazards will extend from the crater.

They set exclusion zones accordingly.

Laypeople don’t always understand that things are going on inside the volcano that appears so quiet. They ignore exclusion zones.
