Guest Videos: A Modern Robinson Crusoe on Tofua Volcano


Note: Over at Vella, today’s episode is “Dept. Of Earth-Shattering Kabooms: Hunga Tonga.”

First, because this volcano is not very well known, here are two scientists — Taaniela Kula and Shane Cronin, exploring Tofua:

That lava “lake” turned out to be a ponded lava flow, according to the GVP, but it still means that lava is flowing in Tofua.

On their page for Tofua, the Global Volcanism Program estimates that the ongoing activity started in 2015.

Now here is a crazy person an awesome adventurer who spent almost a year on Tofua — alone.

It has thirty million views, but I only heard about when checking Wikipedia’s Tofua page
