Guest Videos: Submarine Volcanoes and Pumice Rafts


This week, the Kyodo News reported that a giant pumice raft from Fukutoku-Okanoba Volcano is threatening Japan, possibly including Tokyo.

While looking up video, I found an amazing video on an unrelated submarine volcano:  Kavachi.



At least Fukutoku-Okanoba has managed to maintain its new island:



It’s difficult to find English-language videos on this, but by running “Tokyo, pumice raft” through Google Translate, I found some videos with maps and visuals:





It really is a serious threat to wildlife and human infrastructure and livelihood.

Lucky scientists! They can afford sails (this video is from a Tongan underwater eruption investigation in 2020 — more on that next week):
