That’s Siberian tundra wolf, Canis lupus albus, not the Alaskan tundra wolf or Arctic wolf, which some researchers give different scientific names to.
I had no idea that there is such a variety of wolves up at the top of the world!
They all do resemble each other.
Today’s Siberian tundra wolf is found in Kamchatka and other parts of northern Eurasia. I’m not sure how it lives and hunts and could only find one YouTube video of it (not counting hunting videos), but that one is cool.
In it are two captive wolves in Russia. One just stands there as if posing, and the other eventually howls:
Gorgeous!
At Wikipedia, there is a short video of three Siberian wolves playing in snow at a French zoo.
Here are some information links, too:
- Wikipedia page.
- Wolf Intelligencer portal on Siberian tundra wolves, whose range also extends westward into Scandinavia
- A 2022 paper on research into Russia’s wolves. As with the cats of Siberia, until things settle down in human spheres, we can only hope that this conservarion work is continuing.
