I like to think of them as Africa’s “coyote” — a critter sometimes called America’s jackal.
It all depends on your reference point, though jackals are the older species:

Jackal
Lions can afford to sleep twenty hours a day, but jackals must always be ready for trouble (which is usually uninvited).

- Golden jackal (Not in Africa, in southwestern Eurasia; Africa’s golden “jackals” are actually wolves)
