Guest Videos: African Wild Dogs

Not a wolf, although Lycaon pictus is the largest canid on the continent.

They do run in packs, more so than the African wolves seen in most videos last time.

Unlike wolves, which are generalists, African wild dogs are hypercarnivores (as are cats). (There are are dental differences between them and C. lupus, too, and these painted dogs also don’t have dewclaws, says Dr. Wikipedia.)

A hypercarnivorous pack hunter is terrifying.

But life in the wild is harsh for predators as well as prey, and Lycaon is red-listed, with only 1400 wild adults known to still be hanging on in Africa.

Here is a full-length documentary on wild dogs and the people who are trying to savw them.
