Writing Update: Where’s the Newberry Post?

It goes back quite a ways, but the Newberry Volcano post in a long-ago three-part series about Yellowstone has gotten quite a few views, and someone might wonder why it isn’t up.

I took all three posts offline tonight after finishing up the Yellowstone part of background reading for a “Dept. of Earth-Shattering Kabooms” post on VEI 8’s (which will be along in the next couple of weeks, hopefully).

That overall story on the Yellowstone hotspot’s arrival and its effects on what’s now the Pacific Northwest is much more complex than I realized back then, plus there were a few corrections needed — for example, some volcanologists do include Newberry in the Columbia River Basalts/Yellowstone/Snake River Plain group.

Also McDermitt Crater is in the news lately because of its lithium deposits.

It’s all very interesting, too, so I plan to eventually redo the whole thing, either as a series again or in one post. And of course that marvellous embedded video walkthrough of Newberry stays!

This probably is a better project than the Magnitude 9 eruption post after the VEI 8’s, which can wait til next year.

Thank you all so much for your ongoing interest and encouragement!
