Writing Update

I surprised myself with the first two posts in that ongoing three-part Krakatoa series for a Sunday Morning Volcano.

This isn’t to pat myself on the back — the goof about that 1883 photograph in part 1, for instance, was a biggie. I just didn’t know I had it in me to be able to sync thought and word that closely (there is plenty of room for improvement, though; there always is).

I hadn’t planned on getting into so much detail — so much fun, fun detail.

Of course, Krakatoa is very famous and it has a very compelling human connection.

Too, it had been next up on my writing list when I left the Vella project (see previous updates), and probably it had been simmering away at the back of my mind since early March.

All that did help.

I’d like to be able to write at that level or better all the time, though.

The next test will be part 3 — which could but won’t be called “What Is The Sunda Strait’s Problem, Hitting Us With All These Catastastrophes? — because it’s challenging.

That probably will take another week, at least. But if it goes well, here’s my revised plan:

  • Drop the old Vella outline except for the next two “Earth-Shattering Kaboom” posts.
  • In the background, see if it looks feasible to do an eBook with this voice that has developed.
  • If so, and if I can consistently write at that level, then go to it: a series of eBooks on the Precambrian. More on that if things develop in that direction.

We’ll see.
