October 2, 2:04 p.m., Pacific: No eruption, no post pinning. 🙂
I just wanted to share this VOA video on one of the Goma Observatory’s (OVG) programs.
Here is Google’s translation of the YouTube note: “Let’s go to Goma, DRC, where the organization responsible for monitoring the Volcano OVG has opened a center to teach young students and other residents the dangers and how to protect themselves from Volcanoes in an area that has been suffering from the problem of Volcano eruptions from time to time.”
Yes, it’s in Swahili and that is fine, when one remembers that most discussions about dangerous Nyiragongo have been in languages that those most at risk do not understand.
Think about it: What would Seattle/Tacoma residents think if people — highly qualified though they might be — came in and started talking about Mount Rainier. As it erupted (or was about to)? In Swahili?
There is progress here…
♥️
September 28, 2023, 3:37 p.m., Pacific: “Just” some video today from the Goma Observatory:
And today [Sept 28, 2023 around 4PM] the plume clearly showed up at #Nyiragongo volcano despite the cloudy weather.

September 26, 2023, 2:43 p.m., Pacific: The most dangerous active volcano in the world is still quiet, at time of writing.
I’m being proactive because things happen fast at Nyiragongo, and:
- This happened on the 24th:
An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 (Richter Scale) was recorded at 16:21:55, originating from Karongi district, and has been felt in many districts of the country. pic.twitter.com/5sVUI8ajew

That is not bigger than some regional quakes, but if you read that linked post above, you’ll see why a little more concern than usual is warranted.
Also…
- A local volcanologist noted yesterday that the quake was widely felt in the Kivu basin:
Tremblement de Terre de magnétude 5.1 ressenti à Goma et à Bukavu ce dimanche 24/9/2023 à 16h21. Il a égament été ressenti dans tout le bassin du Lac Kivu.

It was a heads-up for me.
And then today…
-
Low SO2 emission was detected yesterday Sept 25, 2023 at #Nyiragongo volcano (estimated mass =20.10 tons) as a consequence of lava effusion inside its main crater. If you read the whole thread, MOUNTS notes that it is a weak emission and might be coming from either Nyiragongo or Nyamuragira.
There is no change here yet, and hopefully, there won’t be for a long time (Nyamuragira did recently finish up an eruption that stayed within Virunga Volcanoes park boundaries).
Still, everyone is watching Nyiragongo closely, and since things really do develop quickly here, we should, too.
