So far, the 2014 Atlantic hurricane season has been a quiet one. Hope it stays that way, too! In 2005, after all, we saw terrible storm surge affect the US Gulf Coast from Katrina:
 

And in 2012, the New York City area was flooded from Superstorm Sandy:
 

Here, National Hurricane Center Warning Coordination Meteorologist Daniel Brown describes storm surge and gives us a website to check when a powerful low-pressure storm system (it doesn’t always have to be a hurricane) is on the way.
